  • · THREAD: the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) are collaborating to protect consumers from Cyclospora cayetanensis, a parasite that has caused multistate outbreaks of foodborne illness in recent years.
  • · The number of reported cases typically rises during the spring & summer, usually in May, June & July. With that in mind, as peak season got underway, the FDA and CDC joined forces in advance to prepare for the potential need to rapidly address illnesses and prevent further cases.
  • · Last year, the FDA began using a new method, developed & validated by FDA scientists, to detect Cyclospora in food. This is a significant step because better detection will lead to better prevention efforts. The agency also developed a method for detecting Cyclospora in ag water.
  • · FDA & CDC are committed to protecting Americans from Cyclospora & other organisms that can make them sick. Both agencies will continue to use all the tools available, from new detection techniques to enforcement tools like import alerts to prevent cyclosporiasis illnesses in U.S.

  • · Today, #FDA revised our advice to make clearer the potential health benefits of consuming fish. It highlights nutrients found in fish - several that have important roles in growth/development during pregnancy & early childhood: https://go.usa.gov/xyT2h
  • · Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends adults eat at least 8 oz of seafood (less for young children) & pregnant or breastfeeding women eat 8 -12 oz of lower-mercury fish per week. However, fish consumption in the U.S. is far less than these amounts.
  • · Our goal is to make sure Americans are equipped with this knowledge so that they can reap the benefits of eating fish, while choosing types of fish that are safe for them and their families to eat.
