FDA and AFDO Partner Announce Award of Grants to State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Regulatory Retail Food Programs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) are proud to announce that more than $1.5 million have been awarded under the AFDO-administered Retail Association Cooperative Agreement in the current fiscal year (FY).  Grant funding was awarded to state, local, tribal, and territorial regulatory retail food safety programs that are enrolled in the FDA Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards (Retail Program Standards). The grant program provides funds for the completion of projects and training to enhance conformance with the Retail Program Standards.

 

The grant application portal opened on Monday, September 4, 2017 and closed on Monday, October 2, 2017.  For this grant cycle, 484 applications were accepted and reviewed, with 397 receiving awards.  This amounted to a funding rate of 82 percent.  The breakdown below identifies funding by project category:

 

·        Category 1: Small Projects (up to $3,000)

Number of Applications Accepted and Reviewed: 152

Number of Applications Funded: 152 (100 percent)

Award Totals: $401,407.00

·        Category 2: Moderate Projects ($10,000 to $20,000)

Number of Applications Accepted and Reviewed: 83

Number of Applications Funded: 30 (36.1 percent)

Award Totals: $550,307.20

·        Category 3:  Training (up to $3,000)

Number of Applications Accepted and Reviewed: 216

Number of Applications Funded: 190 (88 percent)

Award Totals: $522,414.08

·        Category 4: Food Protection Task Force Projects (up to $3,000)

Number of Applications Accepted and Reviewed: 33

Number of Applications Funded: 25 (75.8 percent)

Award Totals: $54,779.74
