  • · We will continue to look for ways to help Americans reduce daily sodium consumption, which is associated with increased risk of high blood pressure. Our latest #FDA draft guidance demonstrates our commitment to addressing this challenge in innovative ways. https://go.usa.gov/xmd4p

@FDAMedia

  • · Today #FDA is issuing draft guidance on the addition of the word “salt” to potassium chloride’s ingredient name on packaged foods. We want to increase awareness that this ingredient is similar to sodium-based salt – plus it contains potassium. https://go.usa.gov/xmd4p

  • · I know that there is great public interest in the development of therapies/other consumer products derived from cannabis. A big topic is cannabidiol (CBD) & a key question is how we, as FDA, are going to address this.
  • · Focusing on CBD, we have outlined a step-wise approach to evaluate the regulatory strategy to determine whether it is safe to include CBD in foods or other consumer products. The goal is to do this as quickly as possible without risking public health.
  • · When CBD is put into consumer products like food, we must understand safe levels and impacts on people who might, for example, ingest large quantities or have health issues. As a matter of good public policy and public health, we need to avoid unsafe levels of CBD in food.
  • · CRITICAL: to our current knowledge, very little research has been conducted to understand critical issues such as: the impact of cumulative CBD exposure in healthy people; risks for people with concurrent illness, pregnancy; what happens if you take CBD with other drugs.
  • · A key goal of the 5/31 hearing & public docket is to gather all available data to help us answer these questions about CBD, & other cannabis products, ensuring that the American public is protected. That’s what consumers expect of the FDA –science-based decisions to keep us safe.
  • · FDA’s also aware some companies are marketing cannabis products in ways that violate the law. Our biggest concern is products that put the health/safety of consumers at greatest risk, such as those claiming to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure serious diseases, such as cancer.
  • · In sum, the steps we’re taking will allow us to get input from stakeholders; define the current science; set a path for information needed in the future; clarify how to regulate these products; and, help keep the American public safe.

  • · Today, I met with @FDA_ORA leadership & staff. I’ve been looking forward to meeting them as I appreciate their “boots on the ground” approach. They are the beating heart of the FDA, and I can’t wait to visit their field offices and international mail facilities in the future.
