- · After a thorough review of available scientific information, the FDA has approved Impossible Foods’ color additive petition for the use of soy leghemoglobin in alternative, non-animal protein sources, like vegetable burgers, and that this use is safe https://go.usa.gov/xyMVw
- · FDA is taking this action in response to a color additive petition submitted by Impossible Foods Inc. Impossible Foods previously marketed soy leghemoglobin to flavor their products intended to be sold to consumers in its cooked form, for example, in a restaurant setting
- · FDA and @CDCgov are advising consumers to avoid buying/feeding to pets, & retailers to stop selling ANY pig ear pet treats nationwide due to an outbreak of human Salmonella infections. CDC reports 127 related cases of human infection in 33 states: https://go.usa.gov/xyMMW
- · o date, FDA has worked with two companies to issue recalls of pig ear pet treats: Pet Supplies Plus stores and Lennox Intl Inc. FDA, CDC & state partners continue to investigate this outbreak:

- · FDA authorizes the use of soy leghemoglobin as a color additive in ground beef analogue products (e.g., “veggie” burgers). FDA reviewed info & data; concluded that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from this use of soy leghemoglobin.
- · The final rule is published in the Federal Register. There is a 30-day period to file objections by any person adversely affected.

- · FDA has updated its advisory about the ongoing pig ear pet treat investigation with new consumer & retailer advice and Lennox Intl Inc. recall information https://go.usa.gov/xyFS9 .
- · @CDCgov reports that there are 127 human cases of Salmonella linked to pig ears across 33 states, dating from 2015 to the present.
- · FDA & CDC advise consumers to avoid buying or feeding ANY pig ear pet treats at this time. We recommend that you safely dispose of any pig ear treats you may have in your home, wash areas that may have had contact with the treats, then wash your hands thoroughly.
- · FDA is working with Lennox to reach their suppliers & customers to find out where else the pig ears went. The agency will update its advisory w/ new info as it becomes available.
