FDA-2019-P-1594, QHC Petition - Petition for the Authorization of a Qualified Health Claim for Yogurt and Reduced Risk of Diabetes
- · Danone North America submitted a QHC for the ability of yogurt to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), suggesting a claim that “Eating yogurt regularly may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. FDA has concluded there is limited information supporting this claim.” Danone also proposes that the phrases “about three to four servings per week” and “at least three servings per week” be designated as optional components of the claim to be inserted as parenthetical statements after the word “regularly”.

NTP Update - April 2019 now available
@SGottliebFDA
- · Yesterday, we announced the signing of an agreement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in our continuing joint effort to protect American consumers from illegal and harmful products entering through International Mail Facilities and Ports of Entry. https://go.usa.gov/xmxms
- · Medical products shipped from overseas through our IMFs come with unnecessary risks that threaten public health. We’re continuing to take appropriate action and step up our investigational capabilities as bad actors try to circumvent the safety of our supply chains.
- · We’ll continue to strengthen our collaborative efforts with USPS, CBP and DEA to detect opioids and other illegal medical products from reaching consumers.

@SGottliebFDA
- · THREAD: Signing off this account for the last time. Going forward follow me at @ScottGottliebMD. #FDA is a special institution, with a singular mission that's palpable as you pass through these doors each day. We protect the public. We promote health. Our mission is indispensable
- · Some things are so special you know there's only a brief period of time when you're gonna be able to do them. This institution is at the intersection of our most profound public health challenges. Leading FDA was a chance to try and advance policies to impact these opportunities.
- · Time is short and our challenges urgent. When you're in these jobs you need to work at it every day, take on the hard problems, marshal political support, galvanize public attention to solve difficult problems, offer enduring solutions. Bad things will happen. Own them. Fix them.
- · FDA is staffed by one of the most talented cadre of people in federal service, and led by outstanding people, including our center directors and deputy commissioners @DrAbernethyFDA and @FrankYiannasFDA and Anna Abram. I'm confident in its future, and the security of its mission.
- · I'll support my colleagues from the sidelines. And incoming commissioner Ned Sharpless who'll be tweeting from @FDACommissioner. Twitter was an invaluable tool to communicate quickly on things large and small, from our political challenges to emerging public health crises
- · Signing off. I want to thank @SecAzar, the people of FDA for their support and camaraderie, @realDonaldTrump for entrusting me with leadership of this critical institution, the Senate for their confidence in confirming me to this role, and especially the American people I served
- · #OUTBREAK FDA working w/ @USDAFSIS & @CDCgov investigating E. coli O103 strain reported from 5 states. Source has NOT been linked to specific food item, grocery store, or restaurant chain. Investigation continues, updates provided here as available > http://go.usa.gov/xmakW
- · We currently cannot advise what foods to avoid at this time. E. coli infection can cause severe stomach cramps, vomiting, & bloody diarrhea. If you think you have E. coli symptoms contact your healthcare provider to prevent worsening of symptoms.
- · The 5 states are marked on the map in the link for those who click through, but they are VA, OH, KY, TN, and GA. We will update as we get more information
@FrankYiannasFDA
- · Encouraging to see that some of the biggest areas of investment include supply chain management and #traceability. The private & public sector must continue to work together to make real-time, end-to-end traceability the food industry norm. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-retailers-ramp-blockchain-tech-100027921.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw
- · Click at link below to see increase in cell phones & mobile technology in real-time. Then, ‘imagine’ how it may be used to create a more digital, traceable, & safer food system in a manner that creates “shared value”. It CAN be done. https://www.gsmaintelligence.com
- · Augmenting traditional epidemiology with new tools, such as computer-based, statistical, genetics-based modeling yields insights into sources of foodborne pathogens. A new Era of Smarter Food Safety & Epidemiology is dawning. #smarterfoodsafety #prevention https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2019/04/researchers-refine-model-to-trace-campylobacter-infections/#more-182652
- · THREAD: @CDCgov is investigating a 5-state #outbreak of E. coli O103. Illnesses have NOT yet been linked to a specific food, store or restaurant. @US_FDA is working w/ CDC, @USDAFSIS & state partners & will continue providing updates: https://go.usa.gov/xmaK5
- · Currently, the food vehicle causing these illnesses has not been identified. If any #FDA regulated products of concern are identified in this investigation, #FDA stands ready to assist in conducting traceback investigations, laboratory sampling, and facility inspections.
- · E. coli infections can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea – if you think you have symptoms of E. coli infection see your health care provider. Learn more about E. coli: https://go.usa.gov/xmaBW
