  • · NEW REPORT: Following a string of safety issues related to U.S. ice cream distributors, @US_FDA engaged a team to inspect & obtain environmental samples from 89 ice cream production facilities in 32 states to test for Listeria monocytogenes & Salmonella. https://go.usa.gov/xmK2b
  • · Many facilities were adhering to good manufacturing practices, but some were in violation of the law, which resulted in 3 voluntary recalls overseen by #FDA in 2017 & 2018. We also collaborated w/ inspected companies to help them make corrections & implement food safety plans.
  • · These results serve as a reminder to all food facilities distributing products in the US of the importance of complying with rules set forth to mitigate safety issues. Ultimately, we must work together to ensure all steps are taken to keep the foods available for purchase safe.
  • · THREAD: Today, #FDA announced new draft guidance for the initiation of voluntary recalls that builds upon 18 months of proactive and systematic improvements to the FDA’s recall processes, better protecting consumers from potentially dangerous products https://go.usa.gov/xmBg5
  • · We remain committed to learning from every recall and seeking out opportunities for improved processes, education and awareness in order to ensure that American consumers are kept safe from potentially harmful products.
  • · Today, I was honored to represent #FDA at an international meeting sponsored by WTO, WHO, & FAO to discuss digitalization of food safety & it’s impact on trade. A New Era of Smarter Food Safety is dawning that will benefit people, food producers, & the planet.
  • · [*retweet @wto] Frank Yiannas: In the US, consumers can not only tip the restaurants but also tip the producers. If the food system is well connected, consumers can reach the smallest farmers in no time.#FoodTrade2019
  • · [*retweet @wto] At the Forum on #foodsafety and Trade, Frank Yiannas, from United States Food and Drug Administration, pointed out the issue of lacking transparency in current food value chain. He believed that blockchain technologies hold the promise to address this issue.

  • · #FDA is continuing to inspect & investigate the Caito Foods processing facility and also continuing a traceback investigation to identify the specific source of these melons. Updates will continue to be provided.
  • · FDA is advising consumers to not eat the recalled product & to consult their healthcare provider if they suspect that they have developed symptoms that resemble a Salmonella infection. They should also report their illness to FDA. Learn about Salmonella: https://go.usa.gov/xmKZV
  • · NEW REPORT: Today, @US_FDA released a report on its findings from inspections & environmental sampling for Listeria monocytogenes & Salmonella at 89 ice cream production facilities in 32 states. https://go.usa.gov/xmK2b
  • · FDA detected Listeria monocytogenes in 19 of the facilities; however, only 1 of them was found to have the pathogen on a food-contact surface. Salmonella was detected in 1 facility. @FrankYiannasFDA discusses how FDA worked w/ facilities to improve safety: https://go.usa.gov/xmK2b
