USDA Confirms Virulent Newcastle Disease in Backyard Exhibition Birds in Utah, Not a Food Safety Concern

  • · THREAD: We've received multiple inquiries about which critical food operations continue during the shutdown. Examples of the work that we're still doing include: 1) High-risk domestic food surveillance inspections; 2) foodborne illness surveillance and outbreak investigations;
  • · 3) Execution of high-risk food recalls; 4) Inspection of foreign food facilities; and 5) Sampling of imported food samples (including sampling for antibiotic residue contamination and decomposition analysis). These are among critical activities ongoing by dedicated, unpaid staff.
  • · SHUTDOWN UPDATE: We’ve been recalling inspectors to perform critical, high risk food safety inspections. We’ve been asked how many dedicated colleagues are currently working on these unpaid assignments. More people are on the way. Here’s a current snapshot of our field resources:
  • · So far we’ve called back about 100 investigators and 35 supervisors to conduct and support domestic food surveillance inspections of high risk products. These professionals are in addition to FDA staff who were already working high-risk inspections, like foreign food assignments.
  • · In addition, at #FDA’s Office of Import and Enforcement Operations, which cover International Mail Facilities and ports of entry, we have about 450 FDA staff in the field - including investigators, compliance experts and supervisors - supporting these critical safety operations
  • · More staff could be on the way depending on needs. This is a snapshot of some of our current inspection work on high-risk assignments. Taken together, it's smaller than our usual footprint. But we’re targeting the riskiest products to make sure that Americans remain protected.

  • · There's understandable concern about child nutrition programs, but this needs to be clear: USDA’s child nutrition programs are funded quarterly and are fully funded through the end of March. Includes National School Lunch, School Breakfast, and Child & Adult Care Food programs.

FDA Cautions Pet Owners Not to Feed One Lot of Hare Today Gone Tomorrow Due to Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes

@SGottliebFDA

  • · General Mills is conducting a voluntary national recall of five-pound bags of Gold Medal Unbleached Flour with a better if used by date of April 20, 2020. The recall is because of potential presence of Salmonella. FDA is investigating and working with General Mills on the recall.
  • · #FDA is cautioning pet owners not to use lot 12.04.2018 of Hare Today Gone Tomorrow Ground Chicken/Bones/Organs after it tested positive Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. https://go.usa.gov/xEBDj
  • · The affected product is labeled as Ground Chicken and sold online as Ground Chicken/Bones/Organs. Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect both human and animal health.
  • · If you have symptoms of infection, consult your health care providers. Consult a veterinarian if your pet has symptoms. #FDA has info on the symptoms here: https://go.usa.gov/xEBDj
  • · Pets can get sick from bacteria and may also be carriers of it and pass it onto their human companions without appearing to be ill. #FDA is aware of recent cases in which humans and/or animals have gotten sick from exposure to contaminated pet foods.
  • · #FDA is concerned about pathogens like these in any pet food. This lot of pet food poses a serious threat to human/animal health. If you have Hare Today Gone Tomorrow Ground Chicken/Bones/Organs, lot 12.04.2018, stop feeding it to your pets.
  • · There are several steps consumers should take to reduce the risk of infection to human and animal health. Start by throwing away the product in a secure container where other animals cannot access it.
  • · Clean where product was stored; clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, toys, floors and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with. Also, clean up pet’s feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may be exposed
